Tragacanth Analysis Service | Pharmaceutical Excipient
MtoZ Biolabs offers comprehensive Tragacanth Analysis Service dedicated to systematic testing and quality evaluation of this natural pharmaceutical excipient. The service includes complete characterization of structural components, impurity profiling, physicochemical analysis, and functional performance testing. These evaluations support formulation development, quality control, and industrial production, ensuring product stability and regulatory compliance.
What is Tragacanth?
Tragacanth is a natural polysaccharide complex obtained from the gum of Astragalus species. It consists mainly of soluble tragacanthin and insoluble bassorin, with the latter accounting for approximately 60–70%. This biphasic composition provides high viscosity, strong suspending power, and excellent emulsifying properties. As a result, tragacanth is widely used as an emulsifier, binder, suspension stabilizer, and controlled-release carrier in pharmaceutical formulations. Beyond pharmaceuticals, it serves as a natural thickener and stabilizer in food, cosmetic, and personal care products.

Services at MtoZ Biolabs
Our Tragacanth Analysis Service covers multi-dimensional testing, from compositional analysis to application-specific functionality:
· Composition and Structural Characterization
Microscopic imaging and iodine staining for morphology observation; FTIR, NMR, and HPLC to determine polysaccharide composition; TLC comparison for identity verification.
· Purity and Impurity Testing
Determination of ash, protein residues, starch, and external impurities. Heavy metal levels are assessed using ICP-MS to ensure material purity.
· Physicochemical Analysis
Measurement of pH, viscosity, swelling index, loss on drying, and ignition residue. Rotational viscometry provides quantitative data on thickening and emulsifying capabilities.
· Microbiological Testing
Plate count, membrane filtration, and MPN methods to measure bacterial and fungal levels, including specific monitoring for E. coli and other regulated microorganisms.
· Functional Performance Studies
Evaluation of tragacanth’s emulsifying, suspending, and controlled-release functions in pharmaceutical formulations, as well as its thickening and stabilizing behavior in food and cosmetic applications.
