Trimethylamine (TMA) is an organic compound with the formula (CH₃)₃N that is generated as a metabolite primarily from dietary sources and microbiota. It is derived from the metabolism of choline and carnitine-rich foods such as red meat, eggs, and fish. The gut microbiota converts these compounds into TMA, which is then absorbed into the bloodstream and metabolized by the liver into trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO). TMAO is associated with various diseases like atherosclerosis, thrombosis, and chronic kidney disease.
The study of TMA is crucial due to its role in human health. Elevated TMA and TMAO levels have been linked with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and mortality. Moreover, altered TMA metabolism has been associated with metabolic diseases, chronic kidney disease, and cancer. Therefore, understanding TMA's metabolism and functions can provide new insights into these diseases and potential therapeutic targets.
