Trehalose is a non-reducing disaccharide composed of two glucose molecules linked by an α,α-1,1-glycosidic bond. It is widely found in various organisms, including bacteria, fungi, plants, and animals, particularly in those capable of surviving extreme environments, such as drought and high temperatures. Trehalose serves multiple important functions within biological systems, including providing energy, protecting cells from stress and damage, and stabilizing proteins and cell membranes. In plants, trehalose helps them cope with environmental stresses such as drought, salinity, and temperature fluctuations, while its antioxidant properties can mitigate oxidative damage. Analyzing the content of trehalose and its metabolites in plants can help reveal their roles in plant growth, stress response, and metabolic regulation, thereby enhancing our understanding of physiological processes in plants. Moreover, trehalose and its metabolites may serve as biomarkers to monitor plant health and resilience against environmental stressors.
