Thymine is a pyrimidine nucleobase with a single-ring structure, featuring a keto group at the 4th position and a methyl group at the 5th position. Thymine is an essential component of DNA, and changes in its content and metabolites directly reflect the activity of DNA synthesis and repair. By detecting thymine and its metabolites, the proliferation status of cells and DNA damage repair capacity can be assessed, which is of great significance for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as cancer and aplastic anemia. Thymine can be reduced to dihydrothymine under the action of dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase, an important intermediate in thymine degradation metabolism. Deficiency in dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase can lead to abnormal pyrimidine metabolism, causing neurological and digestive system disorders. Detecting the levels of thymine and its metabolites helps diagnose these metabolic disorders and monitor disease progression.
