T-IS (Total Indoxyl Sulfate) is a compound containing an indole group and a sulfate ester group, with a chemical structure comprising an aromatic ring attached to a sulfate group. This compound is primarily produced through the metabolism of tryptophan by gut microbiota, followed by sulfation in the liver. Indoxyl sulfate exhibits biological activity, particularly in patients with chronic kidney disease, where it acts as a uremic toxin, exacerbating kidney damage.
Its metabolites include indole and indole-3-acetic acid, which play important roles in plant and microbial metabolism. Analyzing the levels of T-IS and its metabolites in plant and biological samples helps to understand the interactions between gut microbiota and host metabolism, and to reveal risks of kidney damage or other metabolic disorders. In plants, measuring indole-based metabolites is also significant for studying plant stress resistance and growth regulation.
