NAS (N-Acetylserotonin) is a compound synthesized from serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) through the catalytic action of N-acetyltransferase. Its chemical structure consists of a serotonin molecule with an attached hydroxyl and acetyl group. NAS is the direct precursor of melatonin and is widely found in the pineal gland and nervous tissues. NAS exhibits various biological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective effects. In metabolism, NAS can be further converted into melatonin, which has functions such as regulating circadian rhythms, immune modulation, and antioxidant activity. Analyzing the levels of NAS and its metabolites in plant and biological samples is important for studying biological rhythms, neurological disorders, and potential therapeutic pathways.
