Glycolithocholic acid-3-sulfate (GLCAS) is a bile acid derivative and a sulfated metabolite of cholic acid. This compound plays a pivotal role in bile secretion by enhancing bile acid solubility, thereby facilitating their excretion, which subsequently influences liver function and bile circulation. Research has indicated that GLCAS is associated not only with various hepatic and biliary diseases but also exhibits significant antiviral properties. Notably, GLCAS has been shown to protect MT-4 cells from HIV-1-induced cytopathic effects without exhibiting toxicity to host cells. Furthermore, GLCAS inhibits the expression of HIV-1 antigens in HIV-1 infected CEM cells. These findings underscore the potential clinical applications of GLCAS, particularly in the context of viral and hepatic diseases. Therefore, accurate detection and analysis of GLCAS are crucial for advancing our understanding of these diseases, developing therapeutic strategies, and monitoring treatment outcomes.
