γ-Linolenic acid (GLA) is an omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid with a chemical structure consisting of an 18-carbon chain and three cis double bonds at positions 6, 9, and 12. GLA is primarily found in plant oils, such as evening primrose oil, borage oil, and blackcurrant seed oil. Its biological activities include anti-inflammatory effects, regulation of immune responses, and improvement of skin health. In the body, GLA is metabolized into dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (DGLA), which can further convert into prostaglandin E1 (PGE1), possessing anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic, and lipid-regulating properties. Analyzing the content of GLA and its metabolites in plant and biological samples can help assess their roles in nutrition and metabolic disorders, providing scientific evidence for dietary supplementation and disease intervention.
