Fructose-1,6-bisphosphate (FBP) is a key metabolic intermediate involved in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis, serving as a critical regulator of energy metabolism in cells. In the glycolytic pathway, FBP is produced from fructose-6-phosphate by the action of phosphofructokinase-1 (PFK-1), a rate-limiting enzyme in the pathway, while in gluconeogenesis, FBP is dephosphorylated by fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase to regenerate fructose-6-phosphate. FBP plays a central role in regulating glucose metabolism and energy production. Its levels fluctuate in response to cellular energy demands, making it a critical target for studying metabolic health, insulin resistance, and other disorders such as diabetes and cancer. Recent research highlights FBP as a key player in cancer cell metabolism, where altered FBP levels can impact tumor growth and survival. Additionally, studies in metabolic engineering have demonstrated that manipulating FBP levels can enhance the production of biofuels and bioproducts in microorganisms.
Understanding the dynamics of FBP in both normal and pathological conditions is essential for uncovering the underlying mechanisms of metabolic diseases and optimizing metabolic pathways for industrial applications. Accurate quantification of FBP is therefore vital for metabolic research, providing insights into cellular energy status and pathway regulation.
