Erythrose 4-phosphate (E4P) is a key compound in the pentose phosphate pathway and the shikimate pathway. It is a derivative of the sugar erythrose, composed of four carbons, and is synthesized from fructose-6-phosphate by the enzyme transketolase. Understanding the metabolic activity of E4P is critical because it is involved in the biosynthesis of aromatic compounds, including aromatic amino acids, vitamins, and secondary metabolites. Given its pivotal role in various metabolic pathways, any alteration in the level of E4P can have significant impacts on these processes. Dysregulation of E4P metabolism has been associated with several human diseases, including cancer, and hence studying E4P can provide insights into disease pathogenesis and potential therapeutic targets.
