Dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (DGLA) is a 20-carbon polyunsaturated fatty acid with three cis double bonds, located at Δ8, Δ11, and Δ14 positions. DGLA is primarily derived from γ-linolenic acid (GLA) through elongase activity in the body and is widely found in plant oils (such as evening primrose oil) and animal tissues. DGLA exhibits biological activities including anti-inflammatory effects, immune system regulation, and support for skin health. Its metabolites include 15-hydroxy-DGLA and prostaglandin E1 (PGE1), which play key roles in anti-inflammatory responses and vasodilation. Analyzing the content of DGLA and its metabolites in plant and biological samples helps to investigate lipid metabolism pathways, understand their roles in anti-inflammatory and immune regulation, and provide a scientific basis for developing related functional foods and pharmaceuticals.
