Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a steroid hormone with a structure that includes a steroid backbone connected to a hydroxyl group (–OH) at the 3β position and a ketone group (=O) at the 17 position. DHEA typically appears as a white to off-white crystalline powder, slightly soluble in water, and soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether. DHEA is a naturally occurring steroid hormone secreted by the adrenal cortex, testes, and ovaries. It serves as a precursor to several hormones in the body, including testosterone and estrogen, and plays a vital role in various physiological processes. DHEA levels generally decrease with age, making it closely associated with aging, immune function, bone density, and cardiovascular health. The quantification of DHEA is usually performed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) techniques. These methods allow for the precise measurement of DHEA concentrations, especially in studies investigating its metabolic pathways and physiological roles in the body.
