D-ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP) is a critical organic compound involved in the photosynthetic carbon fixation process, specifically in the Calvin cycle. Structurally, RuBP is a pentose sugar phosphate with the molecular formula C₅H₁₂O₁₁P₂, featuring two phosphate groups attached to the first and fifth carbon atoms of a ribulose sugar. As the primary CO₂ acceptor molecule in the Calvin cycle, RuBP plays a pivotal role in the conversion of inorganic carbon into organic molecules, thereby serving as the foundation for the biosynthesis of glucose and other carbohydrates in plants.

RuBP is synthesized in the chloroplasts of plant cells and is continually regenerated through a series of enzyme-mediated reactions. Its significance extends beyond its primary role in photosynthesis; RuBP is also involved in regulating the activity of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBisCO), the enzyme responsible for catalyzing the first step in the carbon fixation pathway. Due to its central role in photosynthetic metabolism, the concentration and dynamics of RuBP within the chloroplast are crucial for maintaining optimal photosynthetic efficiency and overall plant health.
