Brassinolide is the most biologically active brassinosteroid, initially discovered in the pollen of Brassica napus (rapeseed). It has a complex chemical structure based on a steroid backbone with multiple hydroxyl groups, which are crucial for its biological activity. Brassinolide is involved in various physiological processes in plants, including regulating cell elongation and division, promoting photomorphogenesis, enhancing stress resistance, promoting flower and fruit development, and controlling senescence. Brassinolide functions through a specific signaling pathway that involves the BR receptor BRI1 (Brassinosteroid Insensitive 1) located on the plasma membrane. When brassinolide binds to BRI1, it triggers a cascade of signal transduction, ultimately activating transcription factors that regulate gene expression, affecting plant growth and development.
