Biopterin is a pteridine derivative, an important cofactor in biochemistry, primarily involved in various metabolic pathways, including the biosynthesis of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and nitric oxide. In living organisms, the metabolism of biopterin is closely linked to the enzymatic activities that regulate the conversion of phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan into their respective metabolites. Biopterin can exist in multiple forms, such as tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4), which is crucial for the hydroxylation reactions catalyzed by aromatic amino acid hydroxylases. These forms of biopterin are mainly excreted through urine, serving as important biomarkers for understanding metabolic diseases and neurological function. Monitoring biopterin levels and its metabolites is essential for assessing metabolic function and the safety of drugs or substances affecting cofactor-dependent enzymatic processes. Elevated or reduced levels of biopterin or its derivatives can indicate certain conditions, such as phenylketonuria, hyperphenylalaninemia, neurotransmitter disorders, or deficiencies in tetrahydrobiopterin metabolism, and may also reflect the body's response to different physiological or pharmacological interventions.
