9-oxo-15S-hydroxy-5Z,10Z,13E-prostatrienoic acid, also known as Prostaglandin A2 (PGA2), is a biologically active lipid derived from membrane phospholipids, specifically from the dehydration of Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). Prostaglandins, including PGA2, are composed of C20 unsaturated fatty acids with a cyclopentane ring, and they play critical roles in regulating a wide range of physiological and pathological processes, including inflammation, immune responses, and cell signaling.
PGA2 has been extensively studied for its antitumor properties. It induces the expression of γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase and promotes apoptosis in cells. Additionally, PGA2 inhibits the growth of Friend erythroleukemia cells, stimulating their differentiation, causing cell cycle arrest in the G1 phase. Importantly, PGA2 has also been shown to inhibit viral replication at non-toxic doses, demonstrating its potential as an antiviral agent. Recent studies indicate that PGA2 can activate the intrinsic apoptosis pathway by directly stimulating mitochondrial outer membrane permeabilization, leading to cytochrome C release.
