5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT), commonly known as serotonin, is a crucial monoamine neurotransmitter extensively distributed in both the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral tissues. It plays a vital role in regulating an array of physiological functions, including mood, cognition, reward, learning, memory, vomiting, and vasoconstriction. Nearly 90% of 5-HT is synthesized by enterochromaffin cells in the gastrointestinal tract, which are responsible for managing intestinal motility. Additionally, 5-HT is present in Merkel cells of the skin, neuroendocrine cells of the lungs, and taste receptor cells on the tongue. Serotonin is not confined to mammals but is also found in all bilaterians (such as worms and insects), as well as in fungi and plants. Insect venom and plant spines containing serotonin can induce pain, while serotonin produced by pathogenic amoebas may trigger symptoms like diarrhea. Due to its extensive involvement in various biological processes, the quantitative analysis of 5-HT is essential for understanding neurological disorders, gastrointestinal dysfunctions, and for drug development.
