    5-hydroxymethyl-2'-deoxycytidine Analysis Service

5-Hydroxymethyl-2'-deoxycytidine (5hmdC) is a nucleoside derived from cytosine. 5hmdC is formed by the hydroxylation of 5-methyl-2'-deoxycytidine (5mdC), catalyzed by the Ten-Eleven Translocation (TET) family of enzymes. This modification represents an intermediate in the active DNA demethylation process, and its presence has been linked to the regulation of gene expression, DNA repair, and cell differentiation. Unlike 5mdC, which is typically associated with gene repression, 5hmdC has been observed to correlate with transcriptionally active regions of the genome.

5hmdC is particularly abundant in the brain and plays a significant role in the regulation of neuronal function and development. Its tissue-specific distribution and dynamic regulation make it a critical epigenetic marker in various biological processes. Recent research has shown that 5hmdC levels are not static and can change in response to developmental cues and environmental factors, making it a valuable indicator of cellular state and epigenetic remodeling. The modification is also involved in stem cell pluripotency, embryogenesis, and aging. Given its relevance in development, disease, and epigenetic regulation, accurate quantification of 5hmdC is essential for advancing our understanding of these processes.

At MtoZ Biolabs, we use high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS), an advanced and sensitive method, for the analysis of 5hmdC. Our experienced team can help clients uncover the role of 5hmdC in the context of their specific research projects.
