5-carboxycytidine is a modification of cytidine, a constituent of nucleic acids, predominantly found in eukaryotic organisms. Structurally, it is distinguished from cytidine by the presence of a carboxyl group on the fifth carbon atom, hence the name 5-carboxycytidine. 5-carboxycytidine is one of the oxidation products of 5-methylcytosine (5mC), produced via the ten-eleven translocation (TET) family of enzymes. It acts as an intermediate in the demethylation process of DNA, critical for epigenetic regulation of gene expression, cellular development, and differentiation, as well as tumorigenesis.
