2-thiocytidine is a modified nucleoside where the oxygen atom at the 2-position of the cytidine base is replaced with sulfur. While commonly associated with transfer RNA (tRNA) modifications, this nucleoside has gained attention for its significant anticancer properties. As a purine nucleoside analog, 2-thiocytidine exhibits broad antitumor activity, particularly targeting indolent lymphoid malignancies. It exerts its anticancer effects by inhibiting DNA synthesis, ultimately inducing apoptosis in cancer cells. This makes 2-thiocytidine a promising candidate in cancer therapeutics, especially for malignancies that are resistant to conventional treatments.
In addition to its therapeutic potential, 2-thiocytidine plays a vital role in maintaining the stability and function of tRNA. This sulfur modification enhances the stability of tRNA molecules and helps ensure accurate protein synthesis by improving codon recognition, particularly under stress conditions. The dual role of 2-thiocytidine in both therapeutic applications and essential cellular processes highlights its importance in biochemical and clinical research.
