2'-O-methyluridine is a modified nucleoside in which a methyl group is added to the hydroxyl group at the 2' position of the ribose sugar in uridine. This structural modification is significant in the regulation of RNA function and stability. 2'-O-methylation is a common post-transcriptional modification found in various types of RNA, including transfer RNA (tRNA), ribosomal RNA (rRNA), and messenger RNA (mRNA). The presence of 2'-O-methyluridine in RNA enhances the stability of RNA molecules by protecting them from degradation by nucleases, as well as influencing RNA folding and interactions with proteins.
In mRNA, 2'-O-methylation occurs as part of the 5' cap structure in eukaryotes, playing a key role in mRNA translation, stability, and regulation. Additionally, 2'-O-methyluridine modifications in tRNA and rRNA contribute to the proper functioning of the translation machinery, impacting the fidelity and efficiency of protein synthesis.
