Eoxins are produced through the metabolism of arachidonic acid by 15-lipoxygenase, forming 15(S)-hydroperoxyeicosapentaenoic acid (15(S)-HpETE). This precursor is subsequently converted into a series of intermediates, including EXA4, EXC4, and EXD4, which are finally transformed into EXE4 through the action of LTC4 synthase. This biosynthetic pathway closely mirrors the leukotriene formation pathway. EXA4 serves as a transient, intracellular intermediate that is quickly metabolized into downstream eoxins. These downstream metabolites, including EXE4, are secreted from their parent cells, where they are believed to play a regulatory role in allergic responses and the progression of certain cancers. While the full scope of their physiological functions is still being studied, EXE4 is considered a key player in the modulation of inflammatory and immune responses.
