Taurochenodeoxycholic acid (TCDCA) is a bile acid synthesized in the liver through the conjugation of chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) with taurine, found in most species, including humans. After its secretion into bile, TCDCA is released into the intestine, where it typically remains ionized at physiological pH, though it can also crystallize as a sodium salt. In the small intestine, TCDCA acts as a detergent, facilitating the emulsification and absorption of fats by promoting lipid solubilization. It is then actively absorbed in the terminal ileum. As a medication, TCDCA serves as a choleretic, enhancing bile secretion from the liver, and as a cholagogue, aiding bile flow into the duodenum. Additionally, TCDCA is being explored for its potential in treating inflammation and cancer. These features make TCDCA particularly valuable in studies of bile acid metabolism, liver health, gut microbiota dynamics, and drug development.
