Glycolithocholic Acid Analysis Service

Glycolithocholic acid (GLCA), also known as lithocholylglycine, is an endogenous metabolite and a glycine-conjugated secondary bile acid. It is primarily formed by the conjugation of lithocholic acid with glycine, playing a vital role in bile acid metabolism and gut microbiota interactions. Structurally, GLCA is characterized by a 3alpha-hydroxy group, which sets it apart from other bile acids such as glycodeoxycholic acid and glycochenodeoxycholic acid. Synthesized in the liver, GLCA is conjugated with glycine and then secreted into bile, where it undergoes further metabolism by bacterial enzymes in the intestine. Notably, GLCA is also utilized in the diagnosis of ulcerative colitis (UC), nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). These distinct features make GLCA particularly significant in studies of bile acid metabolism, liver health, and gut microbiota dynamics.
