BPG (2,3-bisphosphoglycerate) is a small molecule with the chemical formula C₃H₈O₁₀P₂. Its molecular structure contains two phosphate groups located on the second and third carbon atoms. BPG is a key metabolite produced in red blood cells that participates in regulating the affinity of hemoglobin for oxygen, directly affecting oxygen supply to tissues. Changes in its concentration can indicate alterations in oxygen transport capacity. The presence of BPG enables hemoglobin to release oxygen more effectively in low-oxygen environments, thereby playing an important role in both physiological and pathological states. Research indicates that BPG levels are associated with various diseases, including anemia, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes, making it a potential biomarker.
