5-Methoxytryptamine (5-MT) is an endogenous amine belonging to the tryptamine family, derived from the methylation of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT, serotonin). Its chemical structure consists of an indole ring with a methoxy group attached at the 5th position and an ethylamine side chain with a terminal amino group. Due to this structural characteristic, 5-methoxytryptamine can interact with various neurotransmitter receptors, particularly serotonin (5-HT) receptors, exerting biological effects within the nervous system. In the body, 5-methoxytryptamine is primarily metabolized through oxidative deamination, forming 5-methoxyindoleacetic acid (5-MIAA), with most of the metabolism occurring in the liver, and subsequently excreted in the urine. Given its role as a neuromodulator in the central nervous system, 5-methoxytryptamine is involved in regulating physiological processes such as mood, sleep cycles, and thermoregulation.
Metabolomics analysis of 5-methoxytryptamine utilizes high-throughput techniques such as mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance to comprehensively study its dynamic changes and metabolic pathways within the body. This analytical approach is essential for elucidating the biological functions of 5-methoxytryptamine, optimizing its clinical applications in the treatment of neurological disorders, evaluating the impact of its excess or abnormal metabolism on health, and advancing personalized medical interventions.
